Pyrite Analysis: IGSL carry out hardcore investigations to meet Premier Guarantee requirements and IS 398 Reactive pyrite in sub-floor hardcore –
Part 1: Testing and categorization protocol. Sampling of hardcore below concrete floors is performed by IGSL geotechnicians in a professional manner to minimize disruption for the Client.
Our specialists include Dr George Matheson, Paul Quigley, John Lawler and Daffyd O’Shea who have been involved with investigating pyrite induced heave in hardcore since 2007.
Testing on hardcore aggregate includes:
- Acid soluble sulphate
- Water soluble sulphate
- Total sulphur
- Calcium carbonate content
- Water absorption
- Thin section petrology
- X-Ray Diffraction
- Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM)
Paul Quigley has served on NSAI technical groups since 2012 (IS 398 & Aggregates Panel) while Dr George Matheson is regarded as an international specialist in the area of assessing hardcore for pyrite induced swelling. Both have acted as technical experts in this area and IGSL provided testing and expert witness services on Balllymun Youth Centre High Court Case (on behalf of James Elliott Construction v Irish Asphalt)
